Times of transition are opportunities for reflective examination of origins, fundamentals and future possibility. They are also times of crisis: old organizational forms are at or beyond their breaking point, current responsibilities are difficult to meet, time itself is in short supply and reflection can seem to be a waste of time. It is our premise that successful development in times of transition is predicated on three necessary transition capacities: an organization must sustain itself during the period of time of the transition (and beyond); engage in a reflective examination of its origins, its current needs, and possible directions; and then remake itself in light of the decisions resulting from this examination of origins and needs.
